What to avoid when designing a kitchen

Getting the kitchen of your dreams can seem like a daunting task when beginning the design process, so we’ve come up with some key pitfalls to avoid and things to look out for so you can get the kitchen design of your dreams.

Triangle RuleTriangle rule

One of the first things to think about is the positioning of the key areas in your kitchen. A trick designers use is called “the triangle rule”, this is taking the 3 most important areas and appliances in your kitchen and drawing a triangle between them. Making sure the distance isn’t too big or too small will make sure you aren’t tripping over other people or having to walk miles every time you make a meal.

Starting out with the practical aspects of your kitchen is a good way to make sure it both functions well but also looks great! Making sure you’re efficient with the space available is key to avoiding the exclusion of useful aspects from the design.

Having enough space in your kitchen is essential, not just in terms of floor space, but both storage and preparation space. Thinking about your kitchen functionality before you install your kitchen can prevent the frustration of not having anywhere to prepare and cook food or expensive changes to rectify the issue.

Walking into a kitchen and being confronted with stale air or last night’s dinner not smelling quite as good as it did originally can hugely detract from the effect of the kitchen. A hood extractor fan can make a huge difference for usually not too much cost.

Making sure the light in your kitchen is right can be a tricky balancing act. You don’t want it to be too harsh but equally having light on preparation areas will make it much easier to see what you’re doing and avoid any accidents.

Look at how big the room is, how much natural light can get in, what colours you’re going to use etc. There are so many variables, making sure you make the right decision every time is tricky.
